“Are
you helping an older adult, a younger adult, or anyone with special
needs, manage everyday things such as bills, meals, or to arrange
medical services? Do you help with bathing or dressing, household
chores, transportation to appointments, or companionship? Are you an
older adult or relative, raising someone else’s child? Are you a
provider who is also a caregiver (medical person, clergy, teacher, town
outreach worker, or volunteer)? THEN YOU ARE A CAREGIVER.”

Mission Statement: North Haven Cares values Caregiving, for and by our Community. We provide information, education, support and advocacy for family and paid caregivers.
Goals of North Haven Cares (revised April 2008)
North Haven Cares will provide --
(1) A program called
"CAREGIVING COMMUNITY EDUCATION" to be primarily film showings and
workshops about caregiving, current issues and long term planning, and
related. These educational events will include discussions and support.
They may be monthly circles, or they may be two or three community events a year, or they may take adifferent form. At these events, we
also plan to do 'Needs Assessments' with questionnaires and discussions. Doing 'needs' assessments will enable the Community and
NHCares to plan for and assist with related programs to meet "long term
needs" such as homecare, a potential assisted living residence, and
guidance for careers in homecare and home health. Childcare is another area of interest.
(2) A program called "MEALS FOR NEIGHBORS" or similar. This service will be open
to anyone who requests it. It's a service that might be done with the
Church, serving a monthly meal at the Church, and delivering to those
who cannot get out (the same meal), or solely delivery of a hot meal on a regular schedule. Planning and volunteers are needed to develop this program. For all families participating, other homecare and homehealth or long term care needs may also be included over time.
The North Haven Cares project is all volunteers to date. To become established for the long term, to carry out our mission, achieve the goals above, and to serve the North Haven community for the long-term, it requests donations (for resources, for stability, and potentially for a part time director/administrator.) WE are very soon to be an official NON-PROFIT organization and all donations are tax-deductible (payable to "North Haven Cares").
North Haven Cares, informally since the Fall of 2006, and more formally since the Fall of 2007, organized monthly Caregiving Discussion Circles with occasional speakers (educational). The Board of Officers meets regularly. We listen for community needs, do ongoing research on State and other resources and programs, and communicate to all regularly in a monthly E-Newsletter, and also in the NHNews. We also communicate with medical and town groups, and have helped to coordinate community fundraisers for individual needs (e.g. to support the training of one person who is now a Maine Certified Nursing Assistant, and to support a family caregiver in times of health stress and for associated costs). We thank the wide North Haven community for such generosity for those all events! We have also supported the initiation of a Meals for neighbors program, and invite additional ideas and participation.
Please see North Haven Cares flyers around town, at the Clinic, Waterman's, and in the Store. Email us: nhcares@gmail.com and see CONTACTS for telephone numbers (click on "contacts" along the top of this page).
